Afcon Genius Moment: Oyongo saves the day for Cameroon

The New York Red Bulls full-back provided one of the most memorable moments of the first round of matches by brilliantly bringing down a pass and slotting in a late equaliser
Cameroon defender Ambroise Oyongo provided the Genius Moment of the first round of Africa Cup of Nations matches by salvaging a point for the Indomitable Lions against Mali.

The full-back, who plays for New York Red Bulls at club level, brilliantly brought down Raoul Loe’s lofted pass in the penalty area before slotting past goalkeeper Soumbeila Diakite to secure a 1-1 draw.

Oyongo’s goal, scored in the 84th minute, cancelled out Sambou Yatabare’s opener less than a quarter of an hour earlier.

Yatabare thought he had scored a dramatic second in added time but was flagged offside, and Cameroon escaped with a share of the spoils.

Oyongo had delivered six crosses into the box as Volker Finke’s side sought to break the deadlock and then equalise against Mali but they could not find a way through.

The 23-year-old took matters into his own hands when he stormed into the penalty area, cushioned Loe’s superb pass with his right instep on to his left knee and tucked the ball into the bottom corner.

Group D remains dead even after one match, with Cote d'Ivoire having drawn against Guinea in Tuesday’s other fixture.
